STANTON TENNIS COURTS LEAF REMOVAL & GINKGO TREES

HPTC MONTHLY MEETING AT CARNEGIE LIBRARY OF EASTSIDE IS AT 1:00PM THIS SATURDAY.

HPTC40.ORG FOR CLUB INFORMATION AND MORE.

THE GINKGO TREES LOCATED AT STANTON TENNIS COURTS IN HIGHLAND PARK BETWEEN THE COURTS FOUR/FIVE (4&5) AND SIX/SEVEN (6&7) HAVE BEEN ESPECIALLY LEAFY AND FRUITFUL. THE PICTURES BELOW THE ARTICLE FROM THE WESTERN PA CONSERVANCY SHOW JUST HOW MUCH.

IT IS THE BEGINNING OF THE DESTRUCTION TO THE RECENTLY RESURFACED COURTS SIX AND SEVEN, PRIMARILY, DUE TO THE OILY RESIDUE LEFT BY CRUSHED GINKGO LEAVES AND NUTS.  HOWEVER, THE LEAF REMOVAL TEAM OF HIGHLAND PARK TENNIS CLUB HAS ACTED TO REMOVE THE LEAVES AND NUTS FROM THE TENNIS COURT SURFACE, ALSO SHOWN IN THE PICTURES BELOW. ALTHOUGH THIS STEMS THE PROBLEM ON THE COURTS SURFACE, THE ACRID AROMA WILL REMAIN THROUGHOUT THE LATE FALL WEATHER.

IF ENTRANCE IS MADE BY USING THE SOUTH GATE TO COURTS SIX AND SEVEN, THE CRUNCHING OF GINGKO FRUIT (NUTS) IS QUITE NOTICEABLE, AND THE REMAINING ORDOR ON TENNIS SHOE TREADS CAN LAST FOR SOME TIME.  ALSO, THE TRACKING THE OILY SUBSTANCE ON TO THE TENNIS COURTS REMAINS A THREAT TO THE COURT SURFACE.  THIS IS ALSO VERY NOTICEABLE AT OTHER AREA ATHLETIC FACILITIES, ONE BEING THE ENTRANCE WALKWAY TO MELLON BUBBLE NEAR THE BASKETBALL COURTS.

ANOTHER SIDE ISSUE AS NOTED IN THE WEB BRIEFS LISTED BELOW, IS A POSSIBLE SKIN REACTION.

The oldest tree known to man and a resident of western Pennsylvania – the Ginkgo biloba

The Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba) is a tree that was planted during the sooty industrial days of our region because of its tolerance to such conditions. A unique tree, it is one of the oldest known to man, but is not native to North America. It dates to prehistoric times and is often referred to as the living fossil. It was saved from extinction by Buddhist priests who preserved it in temples in Japan, China and Korea. The fruit has a unpleasant odor. It features a straight trunk and an open, pyramid-shaped crown. As the tree gets older, the crown becomes wide-spreading and irregular. The Parkway North (I-279) on Pittsburgh’s North Side is lined with young ginkgo trees. The trees can reach a height of 50′ to 70′ high and 30′ to 40′ in width. The leaves are simple, alternate; 3-5 in clusters on spurs; 1-2 long, 1-1/2-3 wide. They appear now as light green, turning yellow and shedding in autumn.

This tree is featured in a new section on our Website — The Trees of Pittsburgh.
